getting lost
Mar. 11th, 2004 08:31 amI have discovered this morning that it's about as hard to get lost in Oxford as it is to in Cincinnati.
I had the vaguest of ideas... and I mean vague... of how to get to the bus stop from my flat. Well, I took about 3 wrong turns, turned around, took another wrong turn, wound up not knowing where the hell I was, and ran smack into Queen Street, which I recognized. From Queen street I could look at the eensy little map that I got off of the Park and Ride bus I usually take and find a bus stop. The point is, if you wander around long enough, you'll hit either a street you recognize, or something that turns into High Street (the main drag thru Oxford. And yes, Queen Street does turn into High Street). :)
And then, I remembered I had a map of Oxford proper that the hotel had given me while I was waiting for a room. Lo and behold, that one little piece of paper had every bit of information on it I needed, including the tiny street I now live on. Now I can find my way around!
I love how everything happens for a reason. Not getting that hotel room immediately was such a good thing, as it forced me not only to get out, but also to get a good, detailed map from the hotel that I may not have snagged otherwise.
Much props to my coworker who took me to the flat yesterday and aided in preventing a major freakout. (There's a code to get in the gate at the flats. I punched it in, nothing. I tried again, nothing. I somehow dialed a room number and some guy told me "I can't give you the code, security reasons", and since I thought I'd contacted an office of some kind and not a personal residence, I started freaking. Eventually someone drove up behind us, my coworker asked if he could help, and the kind gentleman pointed out that the "*" in front of the number meant, uh, YOU HAVE TO PUSH "*" FIRST. My god. I'm such a moron sometimes.)
My flat KICKS ASS. The bathtub I was bemoaning about losing? Still have one. I have 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a living room/ dining room, kitchen and a small terrace. Plus dishwasher and washer/dryer. Somebody HAS to come visit me now, I have plenty of room! :)
So. Things are starting to go ok. Yay England! Yay me!
Cheers!
